Head of Subject Area in Game Design

Prof. Ulrich Götz heads the subject area in Game Design, leading the generation of curricular content, structural organization of the subject matter, and university teaching. Ulrich has built up extensive experience in the research and development of serious & applied games, over years of cooperation with numerous partners from medical, therapeutical, and educational contexts.

The central themes in Ulrich‘s university teaching are spatial design in virtual environments, 3D-modelling and animation, game concepts and analysis, motivation design, and the development of serious & applied games.

René Bauer

Head of Master's specialization, Subject Area in Game Design

René Bauer ist Leiter der MA-Vertiefung der Fachrichtung Game Design und unterrichtet mit Schwerpunkt auf Game Engine Development. Er ist in Projektentwicklungen in Studium und Forschung engagiert. Er betreibt die Auseinandersetzung mit Games im Bereich Gamestudies und Kulturwissenschaften. Als Game Designer und Applicationsentwickler betreibt er eigene Spielprojekte, experimentiert mit AND-OR an der Schnittstelle zwischen Game und Kunst und arbeitet an kollaborativen Schreibumgebungen wie nic-las oder textmachina (Web 2.0).

Florian Faller

Lecturer

Florian Faller works as a lecturer in the Subject Area in Game Design at Zurich University of the Arts with a focus on Visual Arts and Game Culture. His portfolio as a game designer refers from Independent Games and Experimental Projects to Serious Games and commercial titles. He is Co-Founder of the Swiss game design studio Bits & Beasts and Co-Designer of Feist.

Florian's projects received numerous international awards and were showcased at international festivals and exhibitions. Before starting his professional career as a game designer, he studied German literature at the University of Basel and worked with various audiovisual media.

Beat Suter

Lecturer

Beat Suter works as lecturer for Game Design at the University of the Arts Zurich, Switzerland (ZHDK), and manages the GameLab. He has a Dr. Phil. from the University of Zurich. From 2006 - 2014 he also worked as a lecturer for the Merz Academy Stuttgart. He organizes festivals and symposia on Indie Games and Game Studies. He is the president of the gameZfestival association. He is founding member of the internationally known art group AND-OR that specializes in gameart and netart. He also works as publisher (edition cyberfiction) and author and reviews projects for the national research funds of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Recently he co-authored the creative card set IdeasForGames.

Leonie Blasi

Administration office of the Subject Area in Game Design

Leonie Blasi works in the administration office of the Subject Area in Game Design. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and in translation with Specialization in Multilingual Communication. From 2013 to 2019 she worked in various companies including a Zurich publishing house, where she worked as a project manager and editor.

In addition to her work at ZHdK, Leonie Blasi is completing her master's degree in psychology in Zurich.

Maike Thies

Research Fellow

Maike Thies is a Research Fellow at the Bachelor Specialization of the Subject Area in Game Design at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). As Head of Interdisciplinary Innovation of the Department of Design (ZHdK), she is envisioning and curating various internationally targeted formats and projects around Possible Futures for the Arts and Design (ZHdK). She is passionate about bridging Game Design and Emerging Technologies with other disciplines to explore new fields of action. Her research activities focus on Interactive Theatre, Narrative Spaces, Immersive Worlds & Play and Future Design Trends.

Maike curates and coordinates the interdisciplinary lecture series «Kein Kino» at the Toni Kino (ZHdK) with a focus on «New Realities & Diverse Futures» in the Bachelor Design. Besides, she is responsible for REFRESH, an interdisciplinary, international festival/conference initiated by the Department of Design and the Immersive Arts Space of Zurich University of the Arts and dedicated to Immersive Arts and the Future of Design. Maike (co-)/curated and/or (co-)/managed exhibitions, festivals and conferences in Switzerland and abroad such as Design Biennale Zurich (guest curation in 2019 on the topic «PLAY»), Expanding Immersive Design (in 2017 and 2018) or an exhibition at the Design Museum in Copenhagen during 3Days of Design in 2018 with focus on the Future of Design, Immersive Arts and Swiss Emerging Talents on behalf of the Department Design (ZHdK).

She studied Media Studies and German Literature at the University of Trier, Germany and graduated in October 2010. In her master dissertation, she discussed and revealed contemporary tendencies in the field of animated documentaries. During an exchange year (2008/2009) she studied at the Department of Film Studies at the University of Zurich.

Anna Lisa Martin-Niedecken

Senior Researcher

Dr. Anna Lisa Martin-Niedecken heads the Institute for Design Research and is a Senior Researcher at the Subject Area Game Design at Zurich University of the Arts. She received her PhD (Dr. rer. nat.; focus on sports informatics, HCI in sports and exergames) from the Institute of Sports Science, Technical University of Darmstadt.

As head of the institute, she coordinates the various research activities at the Department of Design. She supervises and supports researchers in their projects and is responsible for the strategic and contextual further development of the integrative institute. With her background in sports science and her expertise in game and design research, Anna’s own research and teaching activities at ZHdK mainly focus on the design and evaluation of Serious & Applied Games for health, (e)sports, fitness and rehabilitation, as well as on the topic of health design. Anna has already acquired and led numerous interdisciplinary and (inter-)national R&D projects, continuously publishes the results of her work in internationally renowned journals and conference proceedings, and gives scientific talks and workshops. Furthermore, Anna established and leads the interdisciplinary Digital Health Design Living Lab at ZHdK.

For her R&D work, she received several awards (e.g., SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award), was among others featured by TEDxZurich, and was honored as one of Switzerland’s 100 Digital Shapers 2020 in the category "The Creatives" by the Swiss business magazine Bilanz.

Besides her job in academia, Anna is Founder and CEO of the ZHdK spinoff Sphery Ltd, a fitness gaming startup, which received multiple prestigious awards for their research-based products. Anna is also one of the founding members and the Chairwoman of the International Mixed Reality Sports (XRS) Association, as well as founding and board member of the RAL Quality Mark for Serious Games.

Stefan Kraft

Research Fellow

Stefan Kraft arbeitet als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Fachrichtung Game Design. Nach einem angefangenem Philosophie-Studium an der Universität Zürich schloss er 2021 sein Bachelorstudium in der Fachrichtung Game Design an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) ab.

In seiner Praxis und Recherche befasst sich Stefan Kraft multidisziplinär mit Themen wie Wahrnehmung, Digitalität und Interaktion. Seine Projekte umfassen Games, Installationen, Animationen und Web-Projekte.

Goran Saric

Research Fellow

Goran Saric arbeitet als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Fachrichtung Game Design. 2017 schloss er sein Masterstudium in der Fachrichtung Game Design an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) ab. Zuvor absolvierte er eine Lehre als Informatiker und arbeitete für verschiedene Unternehmen im Raum Zürich.

Goran Saric ist Mitgründer der Firma Okomotive AG und arbeitet dort als Game Designer und Programmierer.

Natasha Sebben

Unterrichtsassistentin

Natasha Sebben ist Unterrichtsassistentin in der BA-Vertiefung der Fachrichtung Game Design an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Ihr Fokus liegt auf Narration Design und visueller Gestaltung.

Natasha ist gelernte Grafikerin EFZ und absolvierte ihr Bachelorstudium in der Fachrichtung Game Design (ZHdK). Neben ihrer Beschäftigung an der ZHdK arbeitet sie als Freelance Narration Designerin und unterstützt dabei Studios bei der Erarbeitung und Vermittlung ihrer Erzählungen.

Sonja Böckler

Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin

Sonja Böckler ist Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Fachrichtung Game Design. Während ihres Masterstudiums beschäftigte sie sich mit Art Games und den Grenzgebieten von Games zur Kunst. Seit 2018 ist sie Teil diverser Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte als Forscherin, Entwicklerin und Gestalterin. Daraus entstanden Applied & Serious Games im Bereich der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit «Foodscape», neuer Technologien wie Augmented Reality «Tales on Rails» oder innerhalb der Kulturförderung «Games@Museums». Ihr momentaner Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt insbesondere auf bewegungsbasierten Rehabilitation Games und Health Games.

In der Lehre unterstützt sie das Team im Bereich Game Visuals und den Grundlagen der Spieltheorie.

Mela Kocher

Research Fellow

Dr. Mela Kocher ist Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der MA-Vertiefung der Fachrichtung Game Design. Sie arbeitet im Bereich Forschung und Entwicklung (mit den Schwerpunkten Applied Games und Urban Games). Für das International Office entwickelte sie das Urban Game LucyZH, das internationalen Studierenden die Stadt Zürich näher bringt. In der Lehre ist sie in der BA-Vertiefung der Fachrichtung Game Design (Seminare zu Serious and Applied Games) und im Master of Arts in Design (Fach-Orientierung C, Minorstudium) tätig.

Hiloko Kato

Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin

Hiloko Kato works as a senior researcher in Game Design with a focus on game reception, teaches in the Major Game Design and researches media reception in the SNF Sinergia project «Confoederatio Ludens - Swiss Game History, Play and Game Design 1968-2000». Further, she is associated with Prof. Heiko Hausendorf’s chair in German Linguistics at the University of Zurich and works as a lecturer at the German Seminar.

As a linguist, Hiloko Kato is interested in interfaces between digital games and language. This includes the semiotic analysis of games (understood as multimodal texts) and investigating games as a cultural asset using media and discourse linguistic approaches. Her current research focuses on the interactional production of digital agency in human players, game characters, animals, and other agents of digital transformation (robots, AI).

As Chair of the DSI Community Gaming, Hiloko Kato is committed to connecting researchers, stakeholders and interested parties in the field of digital games.

Chris Elvis Leisi

Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter

Chris Elvis Leisi arbeitet als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Lehre der Fachrichtung Game Design und forscht im Immersive Arts Space im Bereich Co-Location Multiuser-Virtual-Reality-Erfahrungen. 2021 schloss er sein Masterstudium in der Fachrichtung Game Design an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) ab. Auch unterrichtet er an der Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingaren im Fach Game Design gemeinsam mit Larissa Wild. Chris Elvis Leisi ist Mitgründer der Firma ArchLevel GmbH und arbeitet dort als VR-Spezialist und Game Designer.

Johannes Köberle

Research Fellow

Johannes Köberle ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der BA-Vertiefung der Fachrichtung Game Design an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Seine Schwerpunkte liegen in der visuellen Gestaltung und dem Storytelling im digitalen Raum. So übernimmt er Lehraufgaben in den Modulen «Game Visuals» und «Game Art».

Johannes absolvierte sein Bachelor- und Masterstudium in der Fachrichtung Game Design (ZHdK). Neben seiner Tätigkeit an der ZHdK ist er auch als freischaffender Art Director für Kreativagenturen tätig und unterstützt sie bei der Umsetzung digitaler Inhalte.

Stefan Schmidlin

Research Fellow

Stefan Schmidlin ist als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Forschungsbereich der Fachrichtung Game Design tätig. Er beschäftigt sich mit Serious und Applied Games mit Fokus auf Nachhaltigkeit und Exergames für Reha-Patient:innen. In der Bacherlorvertiefung lehrt er ein Seminar zu Queer Game Studies und disruptiven Designansätzen. Daneben arbeitet er mit dem Kollektiv Insert Coin als Game & Experience Designer an Spielen und interaktiven narrativen Erlebnissen für Museen, Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen. Im Vorstand der IGDA Schweiz engagiert er sich in der LGBTQ Special Interest Group für die Schweizer Game Design Szene.

Stefan studierte an der École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne und an der McGill University Informatik und schloss 2017 sein Masterstudium in der Fachrichtung Game Design der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ab. Vor dem Game Design Studium arbeitete er über zehn Jahren als Experience Designer in der Industrie.

Christoph Polus

Visiting lecturer

Christoph Polus studierte Wirtschaftsinformatik an der FFHS und war viele Jahre in grossen Firmen als IT-Berater tätig. Seit 2011 widmet er sich ausschliesslich der Soundproduktion für Film und Games. In der Bachelor-Vertiefung der Fachrichtung Game Design unterrichtet er das Modul Sound Design für Game Designer, in dem er seine Erfahrungen aus zahlreichen Spieleproduktionen und sein praktisches Wissen hinsichtlich Game-Engines mit Fokus auf Sound vermittelt.
